Suspense in An Inspector Calls Essay Example For Students

Suspense in An Inspector Calls Essay I think one of the most suspenseful parts of this play is the section towards the end of act 2, from when Sheila realises that Eric is the culprit, up until the end of the act.  I also find the last paragraph in the play very enthralling and dynamic.  Sheila is a clever, quick-witted girl, and she realises first before anybody, though some of he audience will have caught on, (and obviously the inspector knows), that the wrongdoer, who her mother has just been telling the Inspector should be brought to justice, is actually her squiffy bother, we know thins (from the text) when she suddenly shouts, with sudden alarm, Mother-stop-stop! but she is immediately dismissed by her father, and then as she tries to protest, her mother severely shouts at her, causing her to cry,( though I dont think that is the only reason why she is crying). We will write a custom essay on Suspense in An Inspector Calls specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As Mrs Birling explains to the Inspector what he should do with the culprit, the suspense is building up immensely, especially when the word duty keeps on being mentioned, this gives a bit of a creepy atmosphere, especially when the Inspectors cool, cold voice cuts through the theatre, dont worry Mrs Birling. I shall do my duty, at this, Mrs Birling thinks she has overcome this high wall, and demolished it, we know this y the way she says, Im glad to hear it. Then he silently teases Mrs Birling, as he has a little fun of his own, No hushing up eh? Public confession of responsibility-um? He is consistent with Mrs Birling, but he finds it ironic, as the audience will soon, that she is giving her own son his sentence without knowing it. In a way, he is mocking her, which is quite surprising, as he has been quite polite so far.  The Inspector doesnt accept Mrs Birlings invitation to leave, by answering, Not yet, Im waiting, this sentence is deeply dynamic, and scary, I think this is probably when the audience and the other characters begin to comprehend, we know that Mrs Birling is becoming a bit wary of something going on when she says, Waiting for what? we can imagine her saying this as id she was answering a mysterious question, in other words, her voice would also have that mystifying, eerie, hesitant feeling, this must also be said very slowly. The Inspector then answers, just as mysteriously and coolly, but nor hesitantly, to do my duty.  I think all of the repetition of the word duty, has set Sheila off like a ticking bomb, she suddenly breaks the ice between the Inspector and Mrs Birling, by saying, Now, Mother-dont you see? Mrs Birlingg finally understands, and slowly, feeling insecure, she says, but surelyI meanIts ridiculous She and her husband are very worried and anxious, we know this because Mrs Birling exchanges a frightened glance with her husband (SD), I dont think Mr Birling understands until his wife looks at him, because he rapidly becomes terrified, (it would be more perceptible while watching the play). We become aware that he is the first to actually say their thoughts aloud, it is as though they all know what each other is talking and thinking about, but no one up until Mr Birling had the guts to actually say it or they just wont come to terms with it.  I think it is very despicable of the Inspector to go on at Mrs Birling, she and the audience realise that she did wrong, and it all seems different now that its her son, but I still find it a bit harsh. .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .postImageUrl , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:hover , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:visited , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:active { border:0!important; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:active , .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0300e16432dd2da429036cb354be73fd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: 20th Century Drama - An Inspector Calls EssayMr Birling is thunderstruck, he is devastated, My God! But-look here-.  Mrs Birling is agitated, and she still wont accept it, I dont believe it. I wont believe it. Sheila comes in with her line of defence, Mother! I begged you and begged you to stop-, this is actually the last sentence said in this act. However, the most suspenseful part is to come. The Inspector holds up his hand. We hear the front door. They wait, looking towards the door. Eric enters, looking extremely pale and distressed. He meets their inquiring stares. I think this last piece of text from the Stage direction, is extremely thrilling, because Sheila is cut off in the middle f her sentence by the inspector raising his hand, this shows how much power he has over them, especially her. This moment, as hey look towards the door is so exiting because we dont know what / who is going to enter the room, well we do, but because the pause is so long, our imaginations bring up images of terrifying thoughts or new developments, trying to rind the answer, and then as Eric comes into the room, the heartbeats of the audience slow to their normal rates and breathe a sigh of relief. I expect its that kind of feeling when the goody is being chased by the baddy (in a film) and everyone is holding his or her breath to see what will happen, and when the goody gets away, you just relax totally.

Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like a child, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven†. When I look at this quote the first thing I realize is the part about becoming like a child. And when I think of children I think of purity, innocence and how simple minded they can be. I think what he is trying to say is that before you enter the gates of heaven you must be pure of sin like a child is at birth. When a child is born their souls are pure of sin. I think in order to enter a place like heaven you must first clean yourself of sin. The other aspect I see in becoming like a child is that children are simple minded. When a child is first introduced to God they do not question his existence yet just believe in him. As we age we find more and more reasons to loose faith in him. I think that before you enter heaven you must be simple minded in order to truly believe in the place you are going to. If you were to think heaven did not exist then you could never get there. Seeing isn’t always believing. Being simple-minded does not mean you are dumb yet it allows you to bel ieve in something that you have never seen like God when you are born and Heaven when you die. This quote to me makes perfect sense for the simple fact that children are more susceptible to believe in things like Santa, Easter Bunny, and more seriously God and heaven. International System of Measurement (SI)

International System of Measurement (SI) The metric system was developed at the time of the French Revolution, with standards set for the meter and kilogram on June 22, 1799. The metric system was an elegant decimal system, where units of like type were defined by the power of ten. The degree of separation was relatively straightforward, as the various units were named with prefaces indicating the order of magnitude of the separation. Thus, 1 kilogram was 1,000 grams, because kilo- stands for 1,000. In contrast to the English System, wherein 1 mile is 5,280 feet and 1 gallon is 16 cups (or 1,229 drams or 102.48 jiggers), the metric system had obvious appeal to scientists. In 1832, the physicist Karl Friedrich Gauss promoted the metric system heavily and used it in his definitive work in electromagnetics. Formalizing Measurement The British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) began in the 1860s codifying the need for a coherent system of measurement within the scientific community. In 1874, the BAAS introduced the cgs (centimeter-gram-second) system of measurements. The cgs system used the centimeter, gram, and second as base units, with other values derived from those three base units. The cgs measurement for the magnetic field was the gauss, due to Gauss earlier work on the subject. In 1875, a uniform meter convention was introduced. There was a general trend during this time to make sure that units were practical for their use in the relevant scientific disciplines. The cgs system had some flaws of scale, especially in the field of electromagnetics, so new units such as the ampere (for electrical current), ohm (for electrical resistance), and volt (for electromotive force) were introduced in the 1880s. In 1889, the system transitioned, under the General Convention of Weights and Measures (or CGPM, the abbreviation of the French name), to have new base units of meter, kilogram, and second. It was suggested starting in 1901 that introducing new base units, such as for electrical charge, could complete the system. In 1954, the ampere, the Kelvin (for temperature), and the candela (for luminous intensity) were added as base units. The CGPM renamed it to the International System of Measurement (or SI,  from the French Systeme International) in 1960. Since then, the mole was added as the base amount for substance in 1974, thus bringing the total base units to seven and completing the modern SI unit system. SI Base Units The SI unit system consists of seven base units, with a number of other units derived from those foundations. Below are the base SI units, along with their precise definitions, showing why it took so long to define some of them. meter (m) - The base unit of length; determined by the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.kilogram (kg) - The base unit of mass; equal to the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram (commissioned by the CGPM in 1889).second (s) - The base unit of time; duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state in the cesium 133 atoms.ampere (A) - The base unit of electrical current; a constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circuit cross-section, and placed 1 meter apart in vacuum, would produce between these conductors a force equal to 2 x 10-7 newtons per meter of length.Kelvin(degrees K) - The base unit of thermodynamic temperature; the fraction 1/273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water (the triple point is the point in a phase diagr am where three phases coexist in equilibrium). mole (mol) - The base unit of substance; the amount of substance of a system which contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in 0.012 kilograms of carbon 12. When the mole is used, the elementary entities must be specified and may be atoms, molecules, ions, electrons, other particles, or specified groups of such particles.candela (cd) - The base unit of luminous intensity; the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 x 1012 hertz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradian. SI Derived Units From these base units, many other units are derived. For example, the SI unit for velocity is m / s (meter per second), using the base unit of length and the base unit of time to determine the length traveled over a given period of time. Listing all of the derived units here would be unrealistic, but in general, when a term is defined, the relevant SI units will be introduced along with them. If looking for a unit that isnt defined, check out the National Institute of Standards Technologys SI Units page. Edited by Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D.

Concert report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Concert report - Essay Example The famous ‘French Favorites for Woodwind Trio’ were to perform. Upon entering the hall, I was fascinated by its appeal. The decorations of the hall consisted of flashing disco lights that spelt classical music. It was all silent though, apart from the director who was showing some clips of the traditional, folk songs in the hall’s giant screen. I wedged my way through the already parked venue, and I was welcomed by familiar faces of my college mates. For a moment, I thought that most of the seemingly young people in attendance were students, but I was proofed wrong by the face of my teacher who was widely smiling in front of me. No sooner had I settled at the a-bit spacious place in the back, the master of ceremony (a lady), took over and welcomed everyone for the concert. The master of the ceremony was notably funny, and she kept the audience laughing over and over as she introduced one performance after the other. The university Chorale opened the floor, with the â€Å"Die Harmonie in der ehe† of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). The Chorale popularity was evidenced by the appraisal of the audience, followed by the singing along the lyrics, from the many girls (lovers of squeaky sound). At this point, I thought that was the best way to start of the performance. Laura Moore’s command of the choir as she conducted indicated her experience and skills. Thomas Rowel was another public figure in the performance, singing tenor. There were no other instrumentals apart from the piano that Brent Nowell played to grace the performance. After the â€Å"Die harmonie in der Ehe†, the group switched to â€Å"O Vos Omnes†, then the â€Å"Sure on This Shining Night† and deserted with the â€Å"When He Shall Die†. The audience kept singing along and finally applauded the group as it exited the stage. Then, the voice recitals with piano accompaniment were performed. As the name suggests, it

Terrorism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

Terrorism - Essay Example Analyzing Different Types Of Terrorism Introduction Based on the execution and effects of terrorist behavior, acts of terror do not just happen; they are well thought and planned. All terrorist behavior is based on extremist beliefs and intolerance towards contrasting interests (Martin, 2009). Although almost all acts of terror are based on political motives, extremism is very divergent depending on the belief systems of the concerned terrorists, thus the existence of different types of terrorism. Left-Wing Versus Right-Wing Terrorism In almost all political systems, there are conflicting views on how the system should be run. There are those factions that support the preservation of traditional values, while other factions advocate for new methods of administration. According to Martin (2009), right-wing extremists are those who believe that the values that led to past glory have been eroded by enemy culture. As a result, rightists often use aggressive measures to preserve these cul tures and cement their status. On the other hand, left-wing extremists act aggressively towards establishing a new order by first destroying the current system. Most leftists believe that they have been oppressed by the existing regime, thus the need to create a just and fair regime. Ideally, leftists consider themselves the voice of the oppressed and engage the rightists in aggressive politics in order to establish a new system. Consequently, rightists respond through terrorist violence in an attempt to safeguard the ideals and order of the group. Pitcavage (2001) gives the example of the militia movement, a paramilitary rightist group that arose in the United States during the 1990s. This movement advocated for the right of every individual to own a gun in order to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. The militia movement claimed that the federal government was creating a conspiracy to rob citizens off their rights and exercise more control over them. To this end, the rightist believed that the government through the police unit was creating security incidents and using the same to increase government power over the people. Moreover, the militia believed that the United States government was colluding with the United Nations to establish a tyrannical regime under the â€Å"New World Order.† Generally, the militia movement would act with hostility towards the federal government. The militias would attack U.S military bases believed to be training troops from the United Nations. In addition, the militias would manufacture illegal weapons and use the same to confront federal authorities (Pitcavage, 2001, p. 971). Martin (2009, p. 254) gives the example of the â€Å"Battle of Seattle† that was organized in 1999 by leftists to protest against globalization. The leftist protestors believed that globalization would limit the role played by each culture in the world, thus bringing about anarchy. However, according to Martin (2009, p. 254), left-wing terrorism has been gradually decreasing since the end of Marxism. State Terrorism State terrorism occurs when states decide to act violently towards international or domestic adversaries. In the international arena, a state may choose to use aggression and violence to

Consumers Behaviour Shaped By The Media Advertising Media Essay

Consumers Behaviour Shaped By The Media Advertising Media Essay The mass media in todays society has shape the way we act, think and react to certain outcomes in our lives. It has such an impact on the choices we make and the choices that are available for us to make, that we sometimes dont even know its there. This often creates an awareness of the roles and attitudes we are expected to react to through commercialism. Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they dont have for something they dont need (Rogers, 2004 ) and these desires of wanting these certain products are largely the results made by the mass media. Perhaps, marketers should look at a different way of targeting consumers without having to mould their minds in such a way that has changed our uniqueness as an individual living in todays global world. Consumer behaviour is often described as the way we make decisions in purchasing specific products. Factors such as economic, demographic, psychological and social influences have played a major role in influencing our behaviour as consumers (Quester McCarthy, 2001). However, as we go into depth, the long term consequences of commercialism are much more serious than we imagine. So are we to blame the firms and organisations for manipulating our minds as consumers? Or are we too fragile to resist such temptation. According to the American Marketing Association (AMA), consumer behaviour is defined as the dynamic interaction of affect and cognition, behaviour, and environmental events by which human beings conduct the exchange aspects of their lives (American Marketing Association 2006). While another definition has defined consumer behaviour as The study of individuals, groups, or organizations and the processes they use to select, secure, use, and dispose of products, services, experiences, or ideas to satisfy needs and the impacts that these processes have on the consumer and society (Hawkins, Best, Convey Koch, 2004). So we ask, is this definition still effective in this scenario, especially when our attitudes and perceptions are being tampered with? Some people feel that they are not affected by advertising, but they are. The media not only advertises directly, but they also try to appeal to people on an unconscious level Its harder to persuade them when theyre thinking (The Ad and the Ego, 1997) shows just how manipulative the media can be. For example, in 2001 the tobacco industry tried persuading its customers by using terms such as light to mislead smokers into believing that those brands are safer. They also made it seem like smoking is a part of everyday life. In many ads that promote tobacco, smoking is introduced as a natural part of having a good time. This as a result encourages consumer into supporting tobacco companies by purchasing their light cigarettes. Advertising is the means by which goods or services are promoted to the public (Petley, 2003). The advertisers goal is to increase sales of these goods or services by drawing peoples attention to them and showing them in a favourable light (Petley, 2003). According to (Arens in Ayanwale, Alimi and Ayanbimipe, 2005), the mission of advertiser is to reach prospective customers and influence their awareness, attitudes and buying behaviour. They spend a lot of money to keep individuals interested in their products. To succeed, they need to understand what makes potential customers behave the way they do. Advertising is a marketing function, and Kotler (in Bokor, Werner and Richardsson; 2004) claims that advertising can have a number of different, possible objectives. One objective can be to inform customers about new product or a price change, while another objective can be to persuade. In this sense advertising is a phenomenon that aims to persuade or influence people (Bjurstrà ¶m, 199 4). Most of the critics today believe that the use of commercialism has dramatically changed the way consumers behave and the way they carry out their lifestyle. Looking at the examples present in todays society, its possible to say that these theories may be pretty accurate. For example, Advertisers often emphasize sexuality and the importance of physical attractiveness in an attempt to sell products. They often emphasise thinness as a standard for female beauty, and the bodies idealized in the media are frequently atypical of normal, healthy women. You are continually competing with everyone around you to be noticed, to be seen, to be admired, to be successful. Ads urge us to become what we behold. It is advertising which defines physical beauty for women. Modern advertising conditions women to strive for an unattainable standard of beauty all in the service of selling products. Women frequently compare their bodies to those they see around them, and researchers have found that exposur e to idealized body images lowers womens satisfaction with their own attractiveness (Magazine Models Impact Girls Desire to Lose Weight, Press Release, 2008). As a result, the depiction of thin models has adversely impacted womens body image, which has led to unhealthy behaviour as women and girls strive for the ultra-thin body idealized by the media. Advertising images have also set unrealistic ideals for males, and men and boys are beginning to risk their health to achieve the well-built media standard. Advertising that pushes people to be small and eat large supports eating disorder thinking and behaviour. The continual onslaught of emaciation, body surgery, and diet publicity actually convinces many people that the lifestyle being portrayed is normal. Such media portrayal validates starvation, cutting behaviors and binge and purge cycles. Plus, this portrayal can delay recovery work. If a person with an eating disorder is subjected to a barrage of images and messages celebrating the symptoms of her illness, she may believe she is living well and wisely and will not seek treatment. This is a cultural phenomenon that is tragic. It contributes to people taking pride in their illness, proselytizing eating disorders, destroying their health, ruining relationships and, in far too many cases, shortening their lives. So do advertisers see such an impact theyve done to consumers? The main objective of advertising is to convince the consumer to behave in a certain manner which is most favourable for the advertiser. It may influence the consumer in different ways, because the advertiser spends an enormous amount of money to sell his product in the most creative and persuasive manner possible. Before 1900 advertising was mostly informational. Ads described products and appealed to consumers logic and judgement. World War I and the 1920s saw advertising shift from text to more emotional and image-centered modes. Advertising became less about products and more about the emotional and social lives of the people buying the products. The growing industrial economy dictated that not only goods but also markets for goods needed to be mass-produced. Soon, advertisements began to promote anxiety, discomfort, and inadequacy among the population. Youre not OK the way you are, You need help. You need salvation Ads generate anxiety and doubts making us feel uncomfortable in our skins. This we call the production of discontent (Hawkins, Best, Convey Koch, 2004). Advertising sells more than products, it sells values, images, concepts, and above all, normalcy it tells us who we are and who we should be. Advertising teaches us above all to be consumers. It teaches us that happiness can be bought, that there are instant solutions to lifes complex problems, and that products can fulfil us and meets our deepest human needs. We live in a consumer culture, saturated with mass media images. Much of our physical, informational, and cultural space is for sale billboards, TV, magazines, newspapers, even the area behind home plate. All of these spaces pitch products promising to improve our lives. We are all, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously, affected by this advertising, often in very subtle ways. Whats important is not our experience of any one ad but that of living in an advertising environment which repeats certain messages again and again. We dont see it very well because we re-surrounded by it all the time. Like Richard Pollay (in Pollay, W; 1979) explains that just as a fish dont think about the sea, we dont think much about ads because we are surrounded by this ad environment from birth to death. He argues that one of educations goals ought to be to get the fish to think about the water. In order to understand modern society, he concludes, advertising is the best place to look. Humans are meaning-making creatures, always wondering who i am? and why do things work the way they do? After a century of experience, advertisers understand the power of symbolism and strive to discover symbols that make people react in predictable ways. Advertisers try to create stimuli to make individuals salivate if you can grab people their emotions, you can get them to follow. We have a cultural disposition to believe what we see. The human brain processes images and words differently. What we reflect on, consider, and even argue with logical appeals built on words, but we dont talk back to images. Advertisers realize that people are more easily influences by images than words. Seeing advertisements on the television, billboards or hearing them on our favourite radio stations has become a part of our daily lives whether we like it or not. Being exposed to numerous advertisements do affect our behaviour in some way what so ever. As a consumer myself, I strongly believe that advertising has a detrimental effect to peoples behaviour in many ways. We tend to follow our primary instincts and forget the real values in life. By acting on our insecurity and self-consciousness advertising makes us more inclined to products we are once happy with. We covet and envy our friends. We become greedy and are never satisfy with what we have. Advertising has created consumerism which affects our ability to communicate with each other. Most people nowadays prefer sharing their thoughts through electronic mail or latest cell phones than personal contacts. We have definitely become more distant from one another and consumerism is probably the main cause of this social alienatio n. On the other hand, while advertising have a negative impact on our personality it may also have a positive impact on economy. The fewer commercials we see, the less amount of money we spend. For a large company and its competitors, advertising has become the only way of introducing products to the customers and for us sometimes it is the only way to learn about what they sell. One of the main indicators of a healthy and strong economy is the money flow or how much money is spent, in other words how much money advertising has succeeded to get out of our pockets. This results in low unemployment rate and increase in our standards of living. Despite the fact that advertising will be thriving on our weaknesses in the years to come, we should try not to become slaves to material things and do our best to retain core values which after all distinguish us as human beings.

Covey 7 Habits Analysis

I have always been a firm believer that there are many different types of leaders. To be a leader you must have natural ability, and have the ability to listen and grow. Being in many leadership roles and positions has helped me to become the best person that I can be. Looking at leadership and management however opened my eyes to a new concept. I had never before realized how much the two go hand in hand. I feel the two words are synonymous in some aspects. My Leadership and Management style helped me to realize what kind of natural skills I have as a leader, and what kind of defined skills I have as a manager. My â€Å"Lamp† chart really was split between the two entities. I always thought that I was much more of a leader than a manager. Come to find out I have skills in both sides that compliment one another. My Leadership style consists of many components, but the main two are my creating abilities and my empowering abilities. I feel that these two are the natural traits th at I have, and they are things that I have expanded on the more I learn about others, and myself. I have always been a creative person, the one with the ideas and new concepts. This has allowed me to be an effective leader in my positions to find other ways to do things, and to be successful at implementing new ideas. I also have the ability to empower those around me. What this means is to get people excited and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish the goal or task we may face. I do this by believing in those around me and giving others the tools they need to lead themselves. My management style however is a bit different. I believe management skills are learned unlike leadership traits.Through the positions I have held on campus, in high school, an in the work place I have learned to become more responsible and in turn some vital managerial skills. Through my â€Å"LAMP† I have come to realize my top two managerial skills are organization, and I am very job centered . I have not always been an organized person, and still believe that there is much room for improvement. With that being said my organizational skills have vastly improved while in college and it is due to the roles I have had within clubs and organizations, and most importantly my fraternity.Organization didn’t come easy for me, but I realized to become an effective manager I needed to be organized, this directly translates to being an effective leader as well. Poor organization can lead to loss of credibility and that is something I try to stay away from. I am also very job centered. This means I like to know what needs to be done, by whom, and with a set date. If I have all of that I am able to delegate and get jobs finished in a timely manner. Being job centered really means I like to have defined roles.Who’s doing what is a big deal for me, especially in managerial and leadership positions. Now the question is are Leadership and Management the same? I think not. T here is a reason that the two are separated on the test. Both Leadership and Management skills are vital when taking any role or position of power. The differences lie in how you take charge and take control. Leadership skills I feel are things you are born with. Leaders also are people who are highly revered, someone who you look up to or want to be.While Managerial skills can be taught if enough hard work and effort is put in. Yet managers sometimes are not revered as a role model because for the most part they tend to be your boss and make less of a personnel connection. This is why I feel having defined skills in both areas can make you the most effective person you can be. Being a great leader allows you to connect with people, excite people, and build credibility. While being a good manager means you delegate well, you stay organized and on task, and you oversee/stay on top of those whom you are managing.According to Kotter in the article What Leaders Do â€Å"Management is a bout coping with complexity. Leadership, by contrast, is about coping with change. † Good management is what keeps chaos from occurring. Kotter talks about how management is a major component in consistency and profitability if we look at it from a business aspect. This article describes how management is all about the complexities and how to good managers cope. â€Å"More change always demands more leadership. † (pg.. 86 Kotter. ) Things are ever changing today. This is why leadership as a practice has now become so important.Kotter talks about the abilities of leaders to run with the change and make things work with little room for discrepancy or chaos. A good leader is someone who can roll with the punches, figure out a new plan of action, and take charge all at once. Leadership is something that takes courage to make the tough decisions when something arises. The two styles although different do go hand in hand. When looking at Leadership and Management in relation to the Greek community we see how vital it is to have students who exemplify both qualities. When obtaining a Leadership role within a Fraternity or a Sorority you are taking a lot of responsibility. To run a Greek house you must have the support and respect from all members, otherwise you can accomplish nothing. Fraternities and Sororities were built on the basis that we share the same goals and aspirations, it is the Leaders job to remind everyone that so they are able to carry on together. Leadership skills also come in handy when relating to your members. If you approach them as a manager instead of their leader they may lose that connection with you. With that being said the Managerial side of running a Chapter also is very important. I like to think of this as the work side. When managing a Greek house you must always be on top of the logistical or behind the scenes work that many members never really get a chance to see, whether it be connecting with nationals, working with hou sing corp. , or going to IFC meetings. This is where being a manager plays a big role because with all of this work organizational skills, delegation, and planning all must take place otherwise mayhem could occur.Once things get out of hand it is hard to pull them back, that is why staying on top of everything as a manager is just as important as being the leader that everyone wants to follow. Another way to look at leadership and management in daily life is Stephen Covey’s book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The book looks at how to be the most effective person you can be. The steps you need to take to do so is also a major component in the book. The 7 Habits prepares you to change your outlook on what it really means to be effective, and in turn what it takes to be a leader.Habit one is Be Proactive. Sounds pretty self-explanatory but when you look more in depth you can really learn a lot from this habit. Being proactive is the root to being effective. It is t he first step away from dependence towards independence. Being proactive means taking initiative, getting things done, and overall taking control of your life. When you become proactive you take responsibility for your choices. You learn what it means to really take accountability and get things done. Being proactive really is all about getting yourself to do what needs to be done and being accountable for that.I have personally seen myself start to be more proactive the older I get. I was a huge procrastinator when I was younger and was always rushing to get things done. Now by being more proactive I have found time to do others things and take on more responsibilities as a leader. Habit two is, begin with an end in mind. This boils down to setting goals. Whenever starting a project or taking something over know what you want to achieve when you begin. This is very important in measuring success. If you have a goal you have a target you are trying to reach. The more solidified the g oal the more prepared you can become while trying to achieve it. To begin with an end in mind is like setting a personal goal or mission statement that can be applied to everything that you do, thus knowing what you can and want to achieve. I find habit two extremely insightful. I have always been an activator, someone who loves to start things and get them off the ground, my problem sometimes is once I start I don’t know where to go. This habit is really on that I connected with because I feel it can help me solidify what I want to do and where I want to go when starting any project in my life.Habit three is put first things first. In other words it is to prioritize by importance rather than urgency. Many times people get caught up and procrastinate, leaving them behind and always rushing to catch up on due dates. In the book there is a chart called the time management matrix, which shows four quadrants. The ideal quadrant is two, if you are living in this quadrant you have your priorities in check and have some free time to enjoy life. Most people however live in quadrant one, which is crisis management and never having free time because of poor pre planning.I find this habit to be one of the more difficult ones to live by. In my â€Å"LAMP† planning was my lowest strength on the management side. I struggle with putting first things first because sometimes I literally do not put first things first. This is something since reading the seven habits that I know I need to work on for my own leadership and management needs. Habit four is think win-win. This chapter explains all the different types of people that are out there. It explains that some people are out there only working for the good of themselves and do not care if they push anyone down to get where they want. This chapter focuses on looking at life from the perspective of win-win. Therefore everyone is no worse off than before. If we always went into a deal looking for the best option fo r both parties then things would run a lot smoother. This habit teaches us that making the right call and doing the right thing will propel you further than if you are only looking out for your own self interest and nothing else. I feel that I am pretty acclimated with this habit. I have always been the type to seek mutual agreements on deals or trades.I feel that by both parties becoming better off there is more room for working together or trading again in the future. Someone who only looks out for themselves will end up burning many bridges and will have no one to rely on soon enough. Habit Five is seek first to understand, then to be understood. This means to listen to someone, really listen to someone. Habit five is all about understanding someone, fully listening and caring about what they say. In turn they will do the same for you. Empathetic listening is key when connecting and seeing where someone is coming from. This is a great characteristic to have as a leader. When someo ne feels like they are really being heard, then they will make a conscious effort to hear you out. This will in turn create an environment of complete unity and will make it that much easier to get things done when you can see from others points of views and they can see from yours. I feel that I have been getting better at understanding first then seeking to be understood. Many times during the beginning of my Presidency I would try to be heard first, what I noticed is that nobody listens when all you want is to be heard. Everybody has a voice and those voices need to have the opportunity to share.Once I learned this many people who I had never even connected with much before my term started coming to me for daily advice because I would actually listen to them. In turn I found myself with a mass support system within the house. Habit Six, Synergize. To combine the strengths of everyone in the group for cohesive and effective teamwork is what synergy is all about. You can also use s ynergy to bring all seven habits together as well. Once you can figure out a way to make them all work then the habits almost condense into one proactive effective lifestyle. To truly understand synergism you must understand and trust the process. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts is a great way to think about synergism. Working to combine the best attributes of people into one is very hard to do but with synergy you must trust others and trust yourself. Synergy can even be related to work, using synergistic energy to bring new ideas and methods is vital to keep things moving and to renew. I feel that because of my Leadership studies minor I have been able to see strengths in people and work together with them implementing my strengths to maximize the potential of the group and do the best job that we can.I also noticed that working as a team and feeding off of others ideas really gets the engines going, creating a better work environment and creating healthy competition . Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw. This is taking a step back, viewing where you are, your goals, and life and really taking the time to meditate and think of how you are effective, and more importantly how you can become even more effective. When you â€Å"Sharpen the Saw† you are taking the time to focus on you. This can even be things like working on your physical health and mental well being. This is very important because if you feel tired, overworked, or stressed it is time to re-evaluate everything and have a plan to better yourself. I like to think of sharpening the saw as if I am looking at my effectiveness and goals from an outsiders view and how I can grow to become a better leader. I feel that I do not take enough time to do this. , partially because I do not manage my time as well as I would like to, to really evaluate myself and how I am doing. I do find it is really difficult to revisit my strengths and weaknesses and how to improve them because I am too worried about how everyone else is doing. When looking at the seven habits and the move from dependence, to independence, and ultimately interdependence I see how the seven habits can really be effective. I found that the seven habits, if utilized correctly can really change your life. The book however in my opinion goes too in-depth about how to use the habits. I feel that it could be condensed, giving more information about the habit itself, and less about how to live your life. The habits should be interpreted by each person from their own standpoint because everyone will use them differently. The part of the book I connected with most was the circle of concern and the circle of influence. This really hit the nail on the head for me. I find myself worried about too much instead of figuring out ways to use my influence to change them. If I was less concerned, and more influential the problems I face would not be there in the first place. This is something I have tried to work on ever since readin g Covey’s book. I also have become more aware of myself. Habit 7 opened my eyes to the fact that I really do need to take care of myself more. By doing this I can effectively use the other six habits to my advantage.Overall I found the habits to be a guide for how to not only be a leader, but how to live life. The habits themselves are great tools to use in a leadership position or to just become a better person. The habits paired with my strengths and my management styles really all coincide. Now I just need to take what I know, take a step back and see how I can apply it to my everyday routine. I want to live like my favorite quote says, â€Å"Don’t count the days, make the days count. † Muhammad Ali. The only way to make the days count is hard work, effort, and the application of my strengths and the seven habits.
